When Life Calls You To Pivot

This week's podcast conversation stayed with me long after we stopped recording.

Not just because of what Danitza shared, but because I saw parts of myself in her story.

This conversation is dear to my heart because I, too, wore a mask for years. Mine looked like strength. It looked like having it all together. It looked like being the one everyone could count on. And if I'm honest, there were seasons when I didn't even realize I was wearing it.

During our conversation, Danitza said something I haven't been able to stop thinking about:

"The mask I wore for years had to be chiseled off my face."

The moment she said it, I felt it.

Because that's exactly what healing felt like for me.

Healing wasn't a decision. It wasn't waking up one morning and deciding to be different. It was years of healing, learning, unlearning, and letting go. Layer by layer, I began releasing the things that once protected me but no longer served me.

Danitza came from a past of trauma and abuse. The mask she built looked like strength too. It looked like showing up flawlessly while quietly storing the pain somewhere no one could see it.

Because not everyone has the bandwidth to hold what you've been through.

And I think many women can relate to that.

The truth is, we don't always recognize the mask because it doesn't look like weakness. Sometimes it looks like being the strong one. Sometimes it looks like saying "I'm fine" when you're not. Sometimes it looks like achieving at a high level while feeling disconnected from yourself. Sometimes it looks like keeping your pain private because you don't want to burden anyone else.

The mask was built for a reason.

It kept you safe once.

But it was never meant to become your identity.

As I reflected on this conversation, three questions came to mind:

Is there a version of you that only comes out when no one's watching?

When someone asks how you're really doing, do you edit your answer before it leaves your mouth?

Are you afraid of what people would think if they saw all of you—the good, the messy, and the unfinished parts?

You don't have to rip the mask off today.

But I am inviting you to notice it.

Because awareness is often where healing begins.
